Matthew Todd Sowders, 38, of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at his residence.
Born November 1, 1981 in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Bruce Sowders and Tammy (Miracle) McCart. He was a utility worker with American Utilities and attended Cornerstone Worship Center. He married Kortni Swango and she survives.
Survivors include his wife, Kortni, of Bedford; two sons, Kaleb Sowders and Kolton Sowders, both of Bedford; his companion, Rebecca Jones, of Bedford; his maternal grandmother, Norma Miracle, of Bedford; his paternal grandmother, Resa Sowders, of Bedford; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his maternal grandfather, Lester Miracle; his paternal grandfather, Paul Sowders; his step-father, Rick McCart.
Following Matthew’s wishes, cremation was chosen. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the Murray Softball Field. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends make memorial contributions to his children.

Betty Gail Ownbey, 76 of Seymour passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at the Lutheran Community Home in Seymour.
She was born February 24, 1944 in Jackson County to Russell and Alma Scott Blaker. She graduated from Freetown High School and lived in Jackson County most all of her life. She lived in Jennings County for a short time. Betty enjoyed working with flowers, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She loved Georgia peaches.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Alma Scott Blaker Martin, her sisters, Marilyn Phillips and Kathy Maxsom and her grandson James Richard Bondowski.
Surviving to cherisher memories are her children, Tony Rollins of Bedford, Gary (Lori) Rollins of Seymour, Misty (Brian) Huls of Crothersville and Christopher Ownbey of Seymour, her grandchildren, Maricia (Josh) Spivey of Freetown, Steven Bondowski of Seymour, Chrystal (Michael) Toole of Newbern, IN, Samantha (Nick) Jeffries, Hunter Ownbey of Seymour, Michaelea (Jared) Caster of Anderson, Natasha Rollins of Bedford, Cameron (Shelby) Rollins of Seymour and Cadence Ownbey of Seymour, 19 great-grandchildren and brothers, Rick (Sara) Blaker of Freetown, Ronald (Jo) Blaker of Ocala, FL and sister, Brenda (Eugene) Davis of Columbus.

Annabelle Long Sykes, 90, of Bedford, passed away at 11:35 am on Monday, May 25, 2020 at I.U. Health Bedford Hospital.
Born August 31, 1929 in Bedford, she was the daughter of William R. and Myrtle (Adams) Long. She married Arthur Sykes and he preceded her in death on August 16, 2017. She retired from the Bedford Regional Medical Center and volunteered there and at local nursing homes.
Survivors include a son, Toby Sykes, of Bedford; a daughter, Candace Sykes, of Bedford; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, Gregory Sykes and Danny Sykes; two brothers, Dale Long and Harry Bryant; three sisters, Violet Ballard, Janet Gomes, and Adele Sutherland.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. No visitation is scheduled.

Merlin Dale “Bob” Quinn

Merlin Dale “Bob” Quinn age 92, of Shoals, passed away May 25, 2020 in Bedford.
He was born February 17, 1928 in Martin County to Cordia Quinn. He married Madeline Jones on January 1, 1957 at Peoples Tabernacle in West Baden.
He attended Powell Valley School, was previously employed by Taylor Hardware in West Baden, as a school bus driver for Springs Valley School Corporation, Russell Trucking in Shoals and retired from the maintenance department of Kimball International Piano in West Baden. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War, was a member of the American Legion West Baden Post and was of the Christian faith.
Survivors include his wife Madeline; two daughters, Dinah (Roy) Bergman of Shoals, Jeanine (John) Cole of Alfordsville; two sons, Craig (Karen) Quinn of French Lick, Kevin (Becky) Quinn of Shoals; ten grandchildren, Carrie roach, Michael Quinn, Chris Quinn, Larry Quinn, Joni Todd, Ryan Bergman, Matthew Quinn, Josh Bergman, Kaci Hall, Jayme Quinn; twenty great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, May 28, 2020 at the Queen-Lee Chapel in Shoals with burial in the Emmons Ridge Cemetery. Brother Kevin Quinn will officiate. Visitation will be 11:00 AM Thursday until the time of service.

Born May 27, 1977, in Paoli, he was the son of Lonzo Franklin Smith and Nina Lanette (Terrell) Parsley.
Kris was a long-time owner of Smith Tree Service and loved his work. He as a member of the Sons of American Legion Post No. 250. Kris enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping, and loved spending time with his boys.

Kathy Lynn Burbrink, 62, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2020, at her residence.
Born June 21, 1957, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Harry Eugene and Shirley Maxine (Pierce) Tolbert. She married John Andrew Burbrink Oct. 6, 2001, and he preceded her in death Feb. 21, 2016.
Kathy retired from General Electric and was a 1975 graduate of Bloomington High School South. Kathy was the best mom.
Survivors include her sons, Michael Joe (Darlene) Pinnick of Paoli, Christopher Brian Pinnick of Mitchell and Nicholas Lee (Stephanie) Pinnick of Bedford; mother, Shirley Tolbert of Bedford; grandchildren, Melody Rose Pinnick, Ryan Alan (Alexis) Pinnick, Brian Wayne Pinnick, Samantha (Dewey) Riffel and Bailey Pinnick; great-grandchildren, Kaidence Pinnick, Waylon Pinnick, Demetrick Riffel and Michelle Riffel; and siblings, Paul Tolbert of Mitchell, Teresa Terrell of Mitchell and Tammy Pridemore of Wisconsin.

Linda C. “Grammies” Mitchell, 79, passed away peacefully with her family by her side in Bedford on May 21, 2020.
She was born in Bedford on Feb. 24, 1941, to Frederick Mitchell and Helen “Baba” (Delaney) Mitchell. Linda was a nurse and in later years worked as a secretary at Meadowood in Bloomington.
Linda was known as Grammies to her grandchildren, she was an animal lover and will be dearly missed by her precious cats.
Survivors include one daughter, Debra (Jack) Woods of Bedford; two daughters-in-law, Debra Herthel of Bloomington and Laura Herthel of Bloomington; three grandchildren, Bretta Skinner, Kara Herthel and Kristen Herthel; two step-grandchildren, Matt (Kristen) Woods and Chris (Brandi) Woods; one sister-in-law, Mary Carrell Herthel of Bedford; several great-grandchildren; and longtime friend, Andy Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sons, Nick J. Herthel and Christopher L. Herthel.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Green Hill Cemetery with Peggy Mitchell officiating.

Donald Eugene Myers, 89, of Bedford, died at his residence Sunday morning surrounded by his family.
Born January 10, 1931 in Unionville, IN, he was the son of Stanley and Mary (Thompson) Myers. He married Sarah Bernice Moore on January 9, 1956, and she survives. He was a veteran, retiring from the U.S. Army and serving in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Donald was of the Christian faith, pastoring several churches for 40 years.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years; three sons, Mike Hall and wife Norma, Donny Myers and wife Mary Beth, and Billy and his wife Kelly Myers, all of Bedford; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Hall, of Bedford; sixteen grandchildren; Annee Fish (Jason), Toby Thurler (Andrea), Missy Stevenson, JD Hall, Caitlin Brinkman (Andrew), Kelsey Colson (Jeff), Gracie Myers, Brett Myers (Aleshia), Briana Brooking (Branson), Ashley Allen (David), Eric Myers, Kaylee Myers, Austin Myers, Riley Spencer, Krystle Allyn (Nik), Tristan Parmley; twenty great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Timothy B. Hall.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Jeff Gladson officiating. Burial will follow in Saltillo Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the hour of service on Wednesday.

Donald Theodore Schackmann
May 30, 1932 — May 25, 2020
Husband, dad, grandad, brother, friend, and all-around good guy Donald Theodore Schackmann passed Monday, May 25th in Bedford, Indiana at the age of 87. To those who knew and loved him, the world will never quite be the same.
Don leaves a loving family – daughters Donna George (Randy), Cheryl Srygley (Tom), Annette Morris (Dave), and Juanita Thompson (Dale); siblings Rita Rasmussen, Therese Bruemmer, Frank Schackmann, and Gene Schackmann (Donna); grandchildren Laura Henderson (Michael), Geoff Morris (Erika), Melissa Richardson (Darrell), Michelle Hartman (Andrew), J.T. Srygley, Natasha Thompson (Steven Oropeza), and Nicholas Thompson (Jazmin); and eleven great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Betty Jean, his parents, sisters Margaret Hollis and Charlene Gribben, and brothers Clarence, Herman, Paul, Joe, and Ralph Schackmann.
Don was born on May 30, 1932 at his family farm in Newton, Illinois, the 11th of 12 children, to Edward and Mary Schackmann. He played high school football and excelled at the high jump in track & field, graduated from Newton High School in 1950, played in the Ambraw Valley Boys band, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952. He served stateside during the Korean War and was stationed in Great Lakes IL, Hutchinson KS, Memphis TN, Norman OK, and San Diego CA.
While on leave in Memphis, he met and fell in love with Betty Jean Elkins, whom he claims whistled at him from a bar as he was walking by (a windy story that was oft told and immediately refuted by Betty). After corresponding cross-country by letter for two years, they finally married on July 21, 1956 after he finished his active military service. The couple moved to Chicago, where Don worked at the Naval Ordnance Station in Forest Park, IL while he was also in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1960.
After welcoming four daughters from 1957 to 1965, the family moved to Bedford, IN in 1969, where he worked as an Electronics Technician at NWSC Crane for the rest of his career.
Don was an active and dedicated member of NARFE, The Stone City Squares and Rounds, and the American Legion Post 33, and was a dedicated past member of Toastmasters Int’l, Inventors Club, and Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department. He and Betty ballroom-danced beautifully until just a few years before their passing.
The passing of the family patriarch, just three months after the passing of the matriarch, marks the end of an era. His love of live music and campfires, family contests & Christmas programs, ability to fix anything that was broken, and insistence we all sing one more round of Edelweiss will be so deeply missed.
An outdoor graveside service will occur at 2:00 on Saturday, May 30th at Cresthaven Memory Gardens, with Andrew Hartman officiating and where military rites will be provided by Gillen Post #33 American Legion. Due to Covid 19 the family will host a brief visitation for those who feel comfortable to attend from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on Saturday, May 30th at the Day & Carter Mortuary

Della M. Smith, 101, of Harrodsburg, passed away at 3:55 am on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at I.U. Health Hospice House.
Born September 28, 1918 in Xenia, IL, she was the daughter of Delmer H and Charlottie M. (Leturno) Henson. She married Deward W. Smith and he preceded her in death. She had worked at Sarkes-Tarzian for twenty-five years and was a member of the Harrodsburg Assembly of God where she had attended since the age of sixteen. She loved gardening and animals, especially birds. She was a wonderful cook and had quite a reputation for her apple and cherry pies.
Surviving is her grandson, Boyce Wesley Smith, of Bedford. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Boyce Wade Smith; a grandson, Anthony Wayne Smith and three sisters, Claudine, Pauline, and Marie.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Friday, May 29th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Clover Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Arthur “Dale” Crane, age 76, of Salem, passed away Saturday, May 23 at Baptist Health Floyd.
Dale was born September 6, 1943 in Lawrenceport, Indiana the son of Roy “Whitey” and Beaulah Mae Brown Crane. He was retired from Swift Transportation. He was a member of Southern Hills Church and also attended Old Blue River Christian Church.
Dale was preceded in death by his wife: Mary Sue Hedrick Crane. They were married November 24, 1961 and she preceded him in death on March 30, 2019. He was also preceded in death by a daughter: Suzan Duchemin, two sisters: Virginia Shoults and Mary Alice Cooper and his parents.
He is survived by his son: Bobby Crane, and his wife, Vera of Salem, a brother: David Crane of Salem, and a sister: Barbara Lee of St. Charles, Illinois.

Orville Neal Dillard, 79 of Paoli, passed away May 22, 2020 at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital in New Albany.
He was born December 15, 1941 in Paoli, to parents, Kenneth Ray & Bertha Annis (McDermed) Dillard. He married Martha Karen Bugh January 16, 1961. Orville was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a retired E7 Chief Petty Officer at North Island Military Base in California. He was a member of the Orleans American Legion and National Rifle Association.

JoAnn Osborne, 81, passed away Friday, May 22, 2020, at her home in St. Marys.
She was born on October 21, 1938, at Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Albert and Gertrude (Brangers) Cooper. She grew up in Kentucky. She had lived in Mitchell, IN., from 1969 until moving to St. Marys in 2005.
She was married to Arthur “Bud” Osborne. He preceded her in death on February 10, 2018. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Linda Kidd and Jack Cooper.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry (Barbara) Osborne, St. Marys and Kevin (Shelly) Osborne, Mitchell, IN; a brother, Carl Cooper; two sisters, Doris Peters and Sandy Florence; four granddaughters, Heather Sergent, Traci Sergent, Miranda Salyer, and Destiny Skeen; 21 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 9:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at the Valley View Cemetery in St. Marys. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Osborne’s name and sent in care of the funeral home.

John “Fred” Frederick Bennett

John “Fred” Frederick Bennett, age 60, of Crawfordsville passed away at home on Thursday, May 14, 2020. He was born on February 18, 1960 in Bedford, IN to Richard & Irene (Sherfick) Bennett.
Fred graduated from Broad Ripple High School and attended Purdue University. On May 25, 1986, he married the love of his life, Denise Kinsler, who survives. He is also survived by a son, Caleb Bennett, of Belleview, Washington; a brother, Richard Bennett of Indianapolis; a sister, Patricia Bennett of Guam; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Nedra Jean Sullivan.
Fred was an electrician at Rolls Royce in Indianapolis and retired after 30 years. Fred loved to ride his motorcycle, fly remote control airplanes, enjoyed camping, and loved being a ham radio operator. Fred was a fun-loving guy that always loved to learn new things, loved to drink a beer once in a while, and was so looking forward to retirement.

Joseph E. “Gene” Smallwood Sr.

Mr. Joseph E. “Gene” Smallwood Sr., age 75, of Salem, passed away Sunday, May 24 at University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mr. Smallwood was born September 7, 1944 in Big Clifty, Kentucky the son of Joseph Henry and Ethel May Harris Smallwood. He retired from the Courier-Journal after 32 years. He was a member of Community Worship Center in Marengo and Westside Christian Church in Okeechobee, Florida. Gene was an Army veteran. He was a member of the American Legion and DAV #72, serving as Treasurer and Adjutant, and currently Commander.
Gene loved his family, playing, joking with, and advising his grandkids and great-grandkids. The grandkids called him “Grumps”. He loved to travel and had visited all fifty states. He loved his winters in Florida, fishing with Denzil and Terry Nesmith. He also enjoyed playing croquet and cornhole with his brothers and cousins. The guys all called him “Scoot”. He was a Little League Baseball Coach in Hardinsburg.
Gene is survived by his wife: Beverly Hamlin Smallwood of Hardinsburg. They were married September 16, 1967. He is also survived by two sons: Paul McGaughey of Hardinsburg, and Joseph Smallwood Jr. (Dana) of Georgetown, a daughter: Leslie McGaughey of Mitchell, five brothers: Jerry Smallwood of Elizabeth, Gary Smallwood of Louisville, Darrell Smallwood of Louisville, Jimmy Smallwood of New Haven, Kentucky and Bobby Smallwood of Leitchfield, Kentucky, two sisters: Doris Willis of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Sheila Henderson of Leitchfield, Kentucky, 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Charles Smallwood and Kenny Smallwood and his parents.

Kevin L. Ramey age 55 of Bedford passed away on Saturday May 23, 2020 at 2:32 Pm at his residence.
He was born in Bedford on April 21, 1965 to Richard Ramey and Marilyn J. (McCain) Ramey. Kevin attended Shawswick and Mitchell Schools, he worked at GE in Bloomington and Heitink Veneers Inc. in Bloomington. He married Darlene K. Hodge on December 30, 2002 and she survives.
Kevin was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather, his joy in life was to take care of his family and friends, his journey is over.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene K. Ramey of Bedford, his parents, Richard and Marilyn J. Ramey of Bedford, two daughters, Meagan D. East of Ellettsville and Noel M. Ramey of Bedford, one step-son, Ryan E. Hodge of Evansville, two grandchildren, Lucas A. Critchlow and Alexis L. Critchlow both of Ellettsville, one brother, Drew Ramey of Bedford, one sister, Ricki (Gerald) Lawhead of Bloomington. Several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Orville Neal Dillard, 79 of Paoli, passed away May 22, 2020 at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital in New Albany.
He was born December 15, 1941 in Paoli, to parents, Kenneth Ray & Bertha Annis (McDermed) Dillard. He married Martha Karen Bugh January 16, 1961.
Orville was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a retired E7 Chief Petty Officer at North Island Military Base in California. He was a member of the Orleans American Legion and National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his Wife- Martha Karen Dillard of Paoli, Daughters- Neala Lewis of Paoli & Mindy Powell of Indianapolis, Sisters- Louise McManis of Paoli, Barbara Fullen of Livonia & Kim Dillard of Bedford, Brother- Wayne Dillard of Paoli, Grandchildren- Jessica Lynn McCardle of Leesburg, AL & Richard Neal McCardle of Nashville, GA, Great-Grandchildren- Stevie Edward Joiner, Haley Alexis Groves & Mallorie Ann Joiner.
Orville is preceded in death by his parents, brother- Don Dillard, sisters- Doris Perkins & Donna Dillard.

Donald Gene Jones, 83, Heltonville, passed away May 14, 2020.
He was born April 30, 1937, in Heltonville, to William Leston and Irene Marie (Ford) Jones. He graduated Heltonville High School in 1956. He married Barbara Rose Henderson.
He began his career working for Lawrence County Highway Dept. using a scythe to clear weeds along the roads. Then he worked and retired from Cummins Engine Company after 40 years of service. After retiring, he went back to work for Lawrence County Highway Dept. once again for six years as a Transfer Operator.
He is survived by Danny (Jamie) Jones of Heltonville, Eddie (Karen) Canada of Michigan, Chris (Beverly) Jones of Bedford, Becky (Jeff) Craig of Bedford, Marcella Jones of Florida, Rachel (Billy) Walker of Bedford, Barry Jones of Bloomington, Jimmy (Stormy) Jones of Bedford and Kevin L. Baker (we thank God) who was holding Dad’s hand when he left this world; brother, Dwight l. Jones of Heltonville; nephew, Doug Jones of Heltonville; sister-in-law, Betty Johnson of Bedford; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beautiful wife, Barbara Rose (July 5, 2003); uncles, Opal Ford, Harold Ford, Arthur Ford, Russell Ford, Onis Ford, Carl Wayne Ford and Glenn Jones; and sister-in-law, Peggy Rose Jones.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Life Missions Ministries, 4557 Bartlettsville Road, Bedford (5 Miles off Hwy. 58 on Pleasant Run/Bartlettsville Road). Pastor Michael Nicholson will officiate.
He will be laid to rest with his beautiful wife Barbara Rose for eternity at Gilgal Cemetery.

Joanne M. Manville age 69 of Bedford passed away on Friday May 22, 2020 at 2:10 Am at St. Vincent Hospice Hospital in Indianapolis.
She was born in Massena, New York on May 10, 1951 to Raymond Jenkins and Elizabeth (Jesmer) Jenkins. Joanne married Stephen Manville on May 6, 1972 and he survives. Joanne previously worked at Walmart in Bedford for 15 years and was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in Bedford.
She is survived by her husband, Steve Manville of Bedford, one son, Chuck (Lori) Manville of Greenwood and one daughter, Amy (Brian) Foster of Bedford, four grandchildren, Bailey Foster, Andrew Foster, Dylan Foster and Chase Manville.
Joanne was a loving wife, mother and grandmother she will be greatly missed by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Connie Stacey.

Walter Hulet Rager

Walter Hulet Rager, 89, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2020, at his residence.
Born Aug. 23, 1930, in Monroe County, he was the son of Walter H. and Hazel E. (Rodgers) Rager, Sr. He married Wanda Jean Cauble April 26, 1952.
Walter drove school bus No. 18 for 32 years for the Mitchell Community Schools. He was also a farmer, and retired from the International Union of Operating Engineers. Walter was a 50-plus year member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM and Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1949.
Walter enjoyed his dogs, shooting clay pigeons, and being at home on the farm.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Rager of Mitchell; children, Monte (Pat Atkinson) Rager of Orleans, Delores “Sissy” Jolley of Mitchell and Kim (Scott) Ferguson of Mitchell; granddaughters, Meghann, Mia, Lauren, Kenia, Mackenzie and Aften; and 10 great-grandchildren.
His parents; son-in-law, Jeff Jolley; and siblings, Wanda Murphy and Robert Rager preceded him in death.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell Cemetery with Pastor Dwight Dunbar officiating.
The family will receive friends after 11 a.m. Sunday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center.

Louis Edward Watson age 92 of Oolitic passed away on Wednesday May 20, 2020 at his residence.
He was born in Bloomington on February 8, 1928 to Floyd and Edna (Swango) Watson. Louis was a US Army veteran and retired from RCA in Bloomington, he was also the Business agent for IBEW Local #1424 in Bloomington.
He is survived by his son, Keith Watson of Oolitic and his companion, Mae Myers of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Kent Watson, a daughter, Kathy in infancy, one sister, Anna Grace Watson, and one brother, Dean Watson

Linda C. Mitchell age 79 passed away peacefully with her family by her side in Bedford on May 21, 2020.
She was born in Bedford on February 24, 1941 to Frederick Mitchell and Helen “Baba” (Delaney) Mitchell. Linda was a nurse and in later years worked as a secretary at Meadowood in Bloomington. Linda was known as Grammies to her grandchildren, she was an animal lover and will be dearly missed by her precious cats.

Kris, born in Texas, was raised in the Indianapolis, IN and Orleans, IN area before moving to Cochran and Montrose area 8 years ago. He was the grandson of the late Sharon Zimmerman and was preceded in death by his wife Laura K. Hill. Kris was a former supervisor at Academy Sports Warehouse in Twiggs County.
Survivors are his children, Kaleb, Aiden and Noah; his father and step-mother, Steve Zimmerman and JoAnn Lassiter of Cochran; his granddaddy, Wayne Zimmerman of Orleans, IN; his sister, Tonya Zimmerman of Indianapolis, IN; his step-brother, Ronnie Bright of Indianapolis, IN; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Robert Scott Seybold, age 70, of Campbellsburg, passed away Thursday, May 21 at Baptist Health Floyd in New Albany.
Mr. Seybold was born February 21, 1950 in Paoli, Indiana the son of Winston and Elenore Boggs Seybold. He was retired from IMI Concrete.
Robert is survived by his wife: Diana Motsinger Seybold, they were married April 8, 1978. He is also survived by two sons: Josh Seybold (Kayla Jo), and Matthew Seybold (Kayla Marie) both of Salem, a daughter: Leia Duffy (Brian) of Bedford, and four grandchildren: Devin Duffy, Owen Duffy, Hudson Seybold, and Kylie Seybold.
He is preceded in death by his parents.

Denise Kay McAlhaney, 57, of Springville, passed away on Monday, May 4, 2020 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born January 2, 1963 in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Darrel and Delores (Brinson) McAlhaney.
She was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School. Denise was a member of Avoca Baptist Church and had attended Crossroads Community Church.
She had previously worked at Indiana School for the Deaf, human resource assistant at Life Designs, customer service at Republic Services, a group leader at Stone Belt, and most recently a contractor in human resources at Cook Medical.
Surviving are her mother, Delores; one brother, Alan (Judy) McAlhaney; two sisters, Beverly McAlhaney and Pam (Greg) Rainey; nieces, Mindy Rainey and her children, Brayden Evans and Kylee Rainey, and Jennie McAlhaney and her son, Jordan McAlhaney; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Darrel.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 22, 2020 at the Avoca Baptist section of Bennett Cemetery with Pastor Lee Brown officiating.

Born October 27, 1968 in Bedford, he was the son of Morris and Joan (Wellman) Wininger. He was a reliability engineer for Honda Mfg. in Greensburg.
Survivors include his mother, of Mitchell; a brother, Steve Wininger (Trisha), of Bedford; a niece, Jakayla Wininger and husband, Doug Saladee, of Bedford.
He was preceded in death by his father, his paternal grandparents, Zenith K. and Evelyn Wininger; his maternal grandparents, Roy Richard and Grace Wellman.

Daniel Lewis Collins, left this world and entered into eternal rest on May 16, 2020, surrounded by his family.
Daniel was born on November 27, 1951 in Mason, WV to the late J.L. and Nola (Blake) Collins.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah (Ferguson) Collins, of 48 years; sons, James (Rachel) of Hobe Sound, FL, Leonard (Krista) of Pell City, AL, Nathan, of Harrisville, PA; daughters, Janette Kimberly, of Bedford and Janelle (Michael) Duncan, of Mitchell; grandchildren, Whitney, Erin, Jerrel, Patrick, Madelyn Rose, Melanie Sue, Austin, Ashlynn, Alexi, Zion, Colin, Jeffrey, Heather, Caitlyn, and a baby due in September; three sisters, Brenda (Dan) Quakenbush, of Ft. Wayne, Joyce (John), of Decatur, and Judy Sherman, of Winner, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Dale Sherman.
Dan Collins had a passion for missions. Following God’s call upon his life he first served in Haiti, followed by 13 years in Arizona, preaching and teaching among the Navajo Indians. He served them faithfully and showed them the love of Christ. After leaving Winslow, Arizona he then filled pulpits in Tucson AZ, OH, PA, NY, and NJ. He provided an example to his children of a life surrendered to God’s will.
Later in life Dan and Deb purchased a home in Mitchell, IN. During these years, he kept busy working in the yard on various projects, yet the desire to serve was still there. He taught at Stone City Christian Academy for 10 years. He was passionate about teaching and investing in the lives of his students. He is remembered best for his encouraging notes to his students. He remained there until his health no longer allowed him to teach.
The final years of his life were spent at home investing in the lives of friends and family. From phone calls, to sharing bits of wisdom or humorous accounts, he always made people smile.
All of us who are left behind realize the legacy we have. He was a Soldier of the Cross who passionately loved and served his Redeemer. He devoted his energy and strength to provide for his family, showing us all the benefit of working hard. He had the greatest time when his children and grandchildren came to visit. From various stories, games played, and times of celebration, the chatter and laughter would fill his heart. Together we would gather for family worship. Never a long or lengthy sermon, but practical words to encourage the family to follow Christ. He would pray for us, and we knew this, no matter where we were.
The time came for your departure to heaven. Sadness fills our hearts. Yet we rejoice because we know you are no longer in pain. You are now sitting at the feet of Jesus. You will be missed, but you will forever hold a special place in our hearts. We love you, and pray that we, your family, follow in your footsteps… and someday we will meet you in heaven.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 20th at Faith Mission Church in Bedford with Rev. Aaron Wardlaw and Rev. Leonard Sankey officiating.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 19th at the Faith Mission Church.

Karen Hubbard Baker, 76, of Indianapolis, passed away at 10:15 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2020, at her residence.
Born Aug. 25, 1943, in Lafayette, she was the daughter of William Otto and Leva Jewell (Elmore) Hubbard. She married Gerald “Jerry” Baker, and he preceded her in death after 32 years of marriage.
Karen was a graduate of Shawswick High School with the Class of 1961. She worked in administrative positions at RCA, Bloomington; Chesebrough-Ponds, Monticello; NIPSCO, Monticello; Carpenter Body Works, Mitchell; and retired as co-owner and bookkeeper of Hubbard TV, Bedford.
She was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church.
Karen loved living close to her only daughter and only grandchild in the Indianapolis area and was blessed by many loving cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. She dearly loved her immediate and extended families and enjoyed staying in touch through Facebook.
Survivors include her daughter, Holly Baker Webb and husband, John, of Greenwood; a grandson, William Gerald Cunha, of Greenwood; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Melton and husband, Craig, of Indiana, Jeff Webb, of Michigan, and Joe Webb and wife, Kate, of Oregon; five step great-grandchildren; a brother, William Larry Hubbard and wife, Jackie, of Brownsburg; sisters-in-law, Carole Stinson and husband, Jerry, of Indiana, Shirley Balcom and husband, Hank, of Pennsylvania, and Mary Jane Baker, of Indiana; aunt, Maxine Henderson, of Bedford; and uncle, Billy Joe Elmore and wife, Ester, of Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers-in-law, William, Donald and Joseph Baker; sister-in-law, Jean Baker; and her mother-in-law, Irene Clerget Baker.
Private graveside service will be conducted Monday at Cresthaven Memory Gardens with Pastor Gary Cornwell officiating. Entombment will follow.

He was born in Bedford on July 24, 1946 to Donald Gabbert and Eldena H. (Barnett) Gabbert. David was a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington and was a retired Finance Manager.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bob L. Deckard
June 22, 1930 — May 16, 2020
Our father passed softly and gently on May 16, 2020 at 5:15 pm with Bobbie and BeLinda at his side. He died of stomach cancer, which we found out about in November 2019. He was cared for constantly by his daughter, Bobbie, who moved home. He died at home.
He was born June 22, 1930 to August and Naomi (McGregor) Deckard. He met our mother, Wilma Mae Stevenson at Oolitic High School. They were married on December 10, 1949. They are now together again. He worked for Nehi Bottling, Loudon Foods and Prudential Insurance Company where he retired from February 15, 1991.
He was a member of Hillcrest Christian Church, The Masonic Lodge, A master Mason, Scottish Rite and La-Or-Ma Shrine Club. He served his country as a U. S. Marine during the Korean War. Now, a 67-year member of the Mitchell Legion.
Dad loved to help people. He never met a stranger.
Survivors include his brother, James Deckard (Carolyn) of Bedford, three daughters, Bobbie (Carl) Hall of Bedford, BeLinda (Mike) Johnston of Bloomington, and Debra Flynn of Bedford. Six grandchildren, Reed (Jacey) Hall, Drew Hall, Ross Hall, Adam Johnston, Jessica Flynn and Devan Flynn, and 5 great grandchildren. Also his spoiled cats, Sami and Tom. Several cousins, nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

She was born on October 10, 1948 in Lawrence County to Gail Bowman and Josie (Fields) Bowman. Myra married Paul Grissom on April 20, 1968 and he survives.
Myra was a graduate of Mitchell High School Class of 1966; she had previously worked at NWSC Crane and attended the Bride of Christ Fellowship in Mitchell.

Dianne was a graduate of Columbus East High School Class of 1976.

Mr. Larry D. Shell, age 79, of Salem, passed away Friday, May 15 at Salem Crossing.
Mr. Shell was born April 24, 1941 in Harlan, Kentucky the son of John E. and Dorothy Young Shell. He retired from Denny Transport after 40 years. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, song leader, and Sunday school teacher.
Larry is survived by his wife: Regina Shoemaker Shell, they were married August of 1962. He is also survived by one son: Jimmy Shell (Beth) of Salem, two daughters: Sheila Fultz (Darrell “Fish”) of Salem and Rebecca Howard (Joe) of Pekin, four brothers: Preston Shell of Salem, Leonard Shell (Linda) of Salem, Robert Shell (Bonnie) of Salem and George Shell (Vonnie) of Campbellsburg, one sister: Debbie Humphrey (Joe) of Salem, 5 grandchildren: Jeremy Shell (Sarah), Troy O’Brien (Alisha), Levi O’Brien (Carlie), Tiffany Odum (Danny), and Tanner Fultz (Casie), and 12 great-grandchildren: Laken, Chayton, Kaylynn, Luke, Malachi, Renlie, Brylee, Charlee, Averee, Kingston, Anistyn and Everleigh.
He was preceded in death by a brother: JG Shell, a sister: Margie Hayden, and his parents.

Raymond Eugene Pate, 84, of Bedford, passed away at 5:20 A.M. on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at Westview Nursing and Rehab.
Born September 8, 1935, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Clay Franklin and Grace (Flynn) Pate.
He married Fay Pate on May 1, 1954 and she preceded him in death on January 16, 2019.
Raymond was a graduate of Shawswick High School Class of 1953 and owned and operated his own family farm.
Surviving are his children, Sandra Kay (Michael) Rech and Donald Ray (Cheryl) Pate; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Wade Daniel (Amanda) Allen and their daughter Lilly, Chad David (Megan) Allen and their children Malachi, Silas, and Zechariah, Christopher Ray Pate and his children David, Leland, and Ryeitt, Brandy Nicole (Nate) Colgan and their children Aaron, Abby, and Caleb, Alyson Marie (Aaron) Eichel, Samuel Michael (Ashley) Rech and their children Spencer and Alyssa, and Steven Taylor Rech; two sisters, Jewel Box and Wilma Jean (James) Kelley; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Ramona Fay Allen; and one brother, Melvin Franklin Pate.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Pinhook Cemetery with Wade Allen, Chad Allen and Kerry Allen officiating.

Born August 23, 1935 in Bedford, he was the son of Elmer and Francis (Robertson) Siedl. He married Helen Margaret Pace on May 2, 1953 and she preceded him in death on October 3, 2012. Roger retired from RCA after 37 years and was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post #33.
Survivors include one son, Tony Siedl and wife Sheryl of Bedford, five grandchildren, Tabor Siedl and wife Barb, Tristen Siedl, Tara McKinney and husband, B.J., Pace Siedl and Kaitlin Siedl, six great grandchildren, two sisters, Phyllis Brock of Linton and Rosemary Stratton of Bedford. Charles James Kidd 95, of Bedford, passed away at 9:39 am on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at White River Lodge.
Born September 1, 1924 in Bloomfield, he was the son of Charles Edward Kidd. He married Ima M. Reed and she preceded him in death. He spent thirty-one years in the U.S. Army and Airforce. He retired in 1972 from the Airforce as an E9 Chief Master Sergeant.
Survivors include four sons, James Robert Kidd and wife, Jackie and John Edward Kidd and wife, Jan, all of Texas; Stephen Gregory Kidd and wife, Leslie of Mitchell, and Dennis Michael Kidd and wife, Nancy J., of Bedford; a daughter, Karen Swango, of Mitchell. 13 grandchildren, James R. Kidd, Jr., Deanna Newman, Chris Kidd, Wesley Kidd, Joshua Swango, Amanda Rogers, Ross Kidd, Samantha Olsen, Miranda Case, Kyle Kidd, Sierra Kidd, D.J. Kidd and Bodhi Kidd and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a brother and sister.

Lavada Marie (Hovis) Doane

Lavada Marie (Hovis) Doane age 89, passed away at 1:55 PM, Thursday, May 14, 2020 at the Westview Nursing Home in Bedford, Indiana.
Lavada was born, January 23, 1931 in Martin County to Odis and Victoria (McBride) Hovis. She graduated from Shoals High School in 1949 and married the love of her life, Lora (Dale) Doane in August of 1950. Dale preceded her in death on December 18, 2002.
During her working years, Lavada worked for Travelers in Orleans, was a cook at the Shoals School Cafeteria, and later was the service manager of the family business, Doane’s Body Shop. She and Dale repaired and painted anything with wheels for the people of Martin and surrounding counties.
Lavada’s greatest joys in life were Dale and their family, camping, animals, (she once had 27 rescued cats) gardening, playing the piano and singing. She sang for many funerals along with Jackie Sims, Betty Downs and Linda Johnson. She was a lady of great faith and was a member of the Dover Hill Christian Union Church.
Lavada is survived by her sons, Bob (Mary) Doane of Dover Hill and Bernard Doane of Oolitic, two grandsons, Danny (Pam) Doane and Eric (Tish) Doane of Shoals; eight great grandchildren, eleven great great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Sara Doane; a brother-in-law, Jaines (Dee) Doane; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Dale, she was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, brothers, Paul Hovis and Russell Hovis; brothers-in-law, Delbert (Dean) Doane, Merlin Mundy and Herb Sherfick; and sisters-in-law, Donna Mundy, Delores Sherfick, Sue Doane, Minnie Hovis and Imogene Hovis.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Monday at the Queen-Lee Chapel in Shoals with Pastor Mike Schlaegel officiating. Burial will be in the Hickory Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be 11:00 AM until the time of service.
All local government guidelines concerning Covid-19 and Social Distancing will be followed. Visitation will be limited to 25 people and the funeral service will be limited to 50 people.

Kenneth Eugene “Gene” Wineinger, of Weddleville passed away unexpectedly at his home on May 12, 2020. He was 84.
Gene entered this life on May 10, 1936 in Medora, Indiana. He was the third born to parents Millard and Ethel (Pray) Wineinger. Gene spent his life in Jackson County. He was a graduate of Medora High School. On July 11, 1953 Gene married Illa Jean (Shepard) Wineinger. From this blessed union of 33 years they were blessed with Donald, Danny, and Teresa. Illa preceded Gene on July 8, 1986. Gene was able to find love again and married Alberta Faye Coryea Scott Wineinger on April 9, 1988, at the Medora Pentecostal Church.
Gene was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved the outdoors if it could be hunted in Jackson County, Gene hunted it. He could be found working his puzzle books, reading his bible, raising his cattle, and enjoying his Boston Terrier, Butterball.
He was a member of the Medora Pentecostal Church. He loved serving his church.
Gene was an engine tester for Cummins Engine Company. He retired after 31 years.
Surviving to cherish his memories, his wife of 32 years, Alberta, children, Rev. Donald Wineinger and his wife Sandy of Lexington, GA, Danny Wineinger and his wife Debi of Jackson, MO, Teresa Brewer and her husband Mike of Medora, IN, Rev. David J. Scott and his wife Les Ann of Sullivan, IN, and Cindy Brown and her husband Keith of Bedford, IN, and a brother Thomas Wineinger and his wife Mary Lou of Seymour, IN, grandchildren Patrick Wineinger, Amber Smith and her husband Blake, Jobi Hampton, and her husband Tim, Seth Brewer and his wife Carrie, Michah White and her husband Buddy, Jessamy Champion and her husband Ryan, Joseph Scott, Destinee Scott, Matthew Brown and his wife Rachel, Austin Brown and his wife Mallorie, and Heather Douglas and her husband Bradley.
Together Gene and Alberta have 18 great-grandchildren.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of 33 years Illa, a brother Millard Wineinger, Jr., a sister Anne Catherine Irwin, and a great-grandson Caleb Matthew Brown.
Funeral Service will be on Saturday May 16, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Hague Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Gill and Bishop M.L. Walls officiating.
Burial will be at White River Valley Cemetery.
Friends may visit at the Hague funeral home from 11:00 am until time of the service. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, mandated by the state of Indiana the attendance in the chapel will be limited to 25 guests present at a time.
Memorials may be written in Gene’s name to the Medora Pentecostal Church Nehemiah Project.

She was born October 8, 1924 in Valeene to parents, Willard & Ola (Jones) McKee. She married George Wisehart May 19, 1962. Lucille was a retired hairdresser at her sister’s salon, “Laverne’s Beauty Shop” formerly in downtown Valeene. She was a member of Valeene Christian Church.
Lucille is survived by her Niece- Kim Pearson of Taswell, Nephew- Kelly Pearson of Louisville.

Born February 3, 1936 in Springville, she was the daughter of Evett and Julia (Meadows) Parker. She married Gerald (Tom) Skinner in 1954 and he preceded her in death on March 9, 2013. She had worked at RCA and was a homemaker. She was a graduate of the Oolitic High School and attended the New Life Holiness Tabernacle.
Survivors include a daughter, Sherri Hillenburg and husband, Dennis, of Bloomington; two grandsons, Brandon Millick and wife, Starr, of Indianapolis and Erik Millick and wife, Heather, of Ellettsville; a granddaughter, Aimee Cross and husband Nathan of Bloomington; several great grandchildren; a brother, Bernard Parker, of Springville; two sisters, Wilma Swango and Brenda Flynn, both of Springville.

James “Jim” E. Lewis

James “Jim” E. Lewis of Mitchell went to his heavenly home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 12, 2020 at the age of 82.
He was born in Martin County to Gladys and Hazel (Roberts) Lewis on 3/31/1938. Jim graduated from Mitchell High School in 1956 and received his Bachelor and Master degrees from Indiana University. He was an educator as well as a minister. He began his teaching career in the Mitchell Community Schools and several years later went on to teach mathematics and chemistry at West Washington School for over 30 years. He pastored Faith Baptist Church in Bedford until retirement and since 2002, he has been an active member of Bedford Baptist Temple.
Jim enjoyed being the pianist at the church and he also shared his talent of playing the accordion. Jim married Helen Edwards on June 7, 1960 and they would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in June.
Surviving with his wife are 3 daughters including Kathy (Gordon) Campen, Karen Wise and Lisa Dumond, as well as 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Joan (Vernie) Adams and Carolyn (John) Buttz. He was preceded in death by his son Jeremy Lewis, son in law Pat Wise, his parents and brothers Paul Gene, Bob and Bill Lewis.
Jim shared much of his time over the years sharing the Word of God and his musical talent, often at Nursing facilities and also at the Mitchell Senior Citizens facility. He was a kind and humble Christian husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.
A private graveside service will be held Monday at the Mitchell Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date for family and friends.

Ada Elizabeth Ritter Deckard, 88, of Bedford, passed away at 3:06 pm on Monday, May 11, 2020 at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born February 16, 1932 in Lawrence Co., she was the daughter of Otto and Oma (Sowder) Ritter. She married Vestal “Andy” Deckard on April 13, 1952 and he preceded her in death on February 20, 1999. She was the head teller for the Bedford National Bank, now Chase Bank. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church and was a member of the church’s Merry Widows Club. She previously attended Donica Church of God for many years and was saved at a tent revival there when she was 13 years old. She was a graduate of Needmore High School where she was a cheerleader and drum majorette. She enjoyed helping others and caring for her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Cherie Stone and husband, Larry William “Bill” , of Bedford; four grandchildren, Wesley Trueblood, Ashley Stone, Justin Stone, Wendy Trueblood Miller and husband, Tim,; four great grandchildren, Amelia, Zachary, Rowan, and Lillian; a sister, Lucille Hederick; a sister-in-law, Vernice Ritter; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Vicki Trueblood; five brothers, Ervin, Ellis, Elbert, Ermil, and Otis, all who proudly served during WW II; two sisters, Evelyn Cracraft and Mary Louise Ritter; four sisters-in-law, Martha Luallen Ritter, Bernice Shaw Ritter, Ona Mae McPike Ritter, and Peggy Bartlett Ritter; two brothers-in-law, Roger Hederick and Herman Cracraft.

The family of Joseph Leo Henley, of Bedford, mourns his peaceful passing from the natural causes of Alzheimer’s Disease. Joe, age 80, died on May 8, 2020, in Indianapolis.
He was born Dec. 3, 1939, at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C., to the late Clarence Joseph and Hallie Louise (Powell) Henley of Wheaten, Maryland. On June 9, 1963, he married Elizabeth “Betsy” Merritt, a lasting and fulfilling union until Betsy’s death in 2010.
A graduate of the University of Maryland, Joe proudly served 20 years in the United States Navy as an officer and a Seabee. A civil engineer, he led vital construction projects all over the globe including the Vietnam Conflict and Antarctica. After retiring from the Navy, Joe earned his teaching certificate from Indiana University and taught mathematics at Bedford North Lawrence High School. After retiring from North Lawrence Community Schools, Joe kept busy working as a construction worker for Pritchett Brothers Construction as well as a professional and volunteer handyman for The Villages of Indiana, Hoosier Hills Red Cross, and his wife, Betsy.
A lifelong Catholic, Joe had a deep faith, growing his spiritual life with prayer, retreats, and most of all, service. Wherever he was in the world, Joe was an active member of his parish, serving in whatever capacity he could: Lector or Eucharistic Minister, Parish Council, Pennies from Heaven, putting up tables after coffee and doughnuts, escorting elderly parishioners, or handing out foreign coins to younger parishioners after Mass.
Joe’s memory will be cherished by his children, Laura Henley of Bedford, Matt (Karen) Henley of Flemington, New Jersey, and Jane (Ben Kupronis) Henley of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Jack, Peter and Brendan Henley of New Jersey and Will, Paul and Kate Kupronis of Georgia; his oldest brother, Clarence “Biff” (Iris) Henley of Washington, D.C; foster son, Ben (Catherine) Hart, of Salisbury, Maryland; and extended family and dear friends.
He is reunited in Heaven with his parents, Clarence and Hallie; his wife, Betsy; and his brothers, Eugene “Gene” and Dennis.
A private family service will be held Tuesday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford, with Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Interment will be held at Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Maryland, at a later date.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be announced at a later date for a proper Mr. Joe send-off complete with penguins and foreign coins.
The family would like to thank the staff of Fairway Village of Indianapolis for being Joe’s caregiving family and especially for their kind and compassionate care during the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic.

Patsy S. Wellman, 87, of Bedford, passed from this life, into her heavenly home, on Saturday, May 9, 2020, at 9:05 p.m. at Mitchell Manor Nursing Home.
She was born in Mitchell on June 18, 1932, to Floyd “Pete” Nolan and Hazel (Hopper) Nolan. Patsy first married the father of her children, John Fleenor, and then she married Arthur “Ray” Wellman, and he preceded her in death in 1993.
Patsy was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a homemaker and graduate of Mitchell High School Class of 1950, and she attended the Calvary Chapel Church in Bedford.
Survivors include her daughters, Carol Blevins and husband Jeff of Bedford and Debbie Kelley of Ashland, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Stephanie (Chris) Campbell of Frankfort, Kentucky, John (Tina) Kelley of Ashland, Kentucky, Dustin Blevins of Bedford, Jessica Kelley of Ashland, Kentucky and Matthew Kelley of Ashland, Kentucky; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert “Bob” Nolan of Mitchell.
Patsy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Bonnie Burton; and one brother, Don Nolan.
Private graveside services will be held on Tuesday at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

She was born October 1, 1952 in New Albany to parents Leroy & Vinola (McCutcheon) Sturgis. She married Paul Herd May 5, 1973. Vicki worked for Salem Poultry and Heritage House Long Term Care formerly of Salem.

E. Louise Fenton, 91, Bloomington, Indiana went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 9, 2020. Louise was born March 13, 1929 in English, Indiana, the daughter of David Martin and Maude (King) Crews. Louise was a retired EEG Technician at Bloomington Hospital, and a member of Southern Hills Church of Christ.
Louise is survived by her children, Janet (Greg) Floyd of Bloomington, Indiana, John (Monica) Fenton of Atlantic Beach, Florida and Martha (Jeff) Minett of Sarasota, Florida; nine grandchildren, Angela (Eric) Chambers, Sara (EJ) Fischer, Nathan (Mandy) Floyd, Jennifer (Ryan) Taylor, Amy (Andy) Deremiah, Rebecca (Jeremiah) Schroeder, Sam (Brittany) Smith, Hannah (Jeremy) Christopher, Kate (Matt) Service and Carrie Fenton; twenty-five great grandchildren.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Edward “Bob” Fenton; two sisters, Fern Jones and Mary Bernhardt; one brother, Charles Crews and one grandson, Joseph Edward Fenton.
Private Family Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard. David A. Tanner

David and his twin brother Joe were born in Danville, Illinois, January 21st 1950 to the late Megan and Bill Tanner.
He grew up with and is survived by his four brothers, Jim, Joe, Tom, and John in an idyllic, central Illinois rural setting surrounded by mature trees, ponds, fertile farm fields and close family. He graduated from Danville High School in 1968 where upon his academic promise and athletic potential received attention from legendary IU swim coach James “Doc” Counsilman. He was recruited to Doc’s program at Indiana University and the rest as they say “is history.” He physically left Danville for Bloomington though throughout his life he steadfastly stated that while he “lived in Bloomington, he was actually from Danville, Illinois.” Thus, he never really left home and recently returned there to end his fight against lymphoma.
David, or Dave to many, quickly embraced Bloomington and the IU experience even though at the time, he recognized that he’d likely be a bench warmer with Olympians and multiple world record holders as teammates. But he reasoned that it gave him an advantage by being able to observe the very best do what they do. And despite sitting on the bench, over the next fifty years, his teammates universally perceived Dave as the glue that bound thirty some years of the Counsilman Era swimmers together. He became the team archivist, the Counsilman historian, the event planner, and the perpetuator of all things Counsilman. Perhaps most importantly to him, he became a devoted friend, affectionate caregiver and valued confidante to Doc, Marge and the Counsilman family.
Following his graduation from IU (Phi Beta Kappa), David began almost immediately to build and express his personal legacy and philosophy. He accepted a coaching position in Spain, became fluent in Spanish and very quickly formed friendships that lasted his lifetime. David became an embodiment of the National Park Service’s “take only memories & pictures, leave only footprints.” He rarely left home without a camera. He had few material wants or needs. And ultimately, he left some very large footprints wherever he went. As he traveled through life, David became a collector of experiences and great friendships. He always had people to see, places to go and things to do… and valued that above the virtual reality offered by today’s technology. Walking anywhere in Bloomington with Dave became an exercise in patience as eight out of ten people passed not only knew him but admired him and the ideals by which he lived.
It is important to be mentioned that David earned his Eagle Scout rating from Troop 19 before leaving Danville. The Boy Scout manual states: “Eagle Scout” is not just an award; it is a state of being. Those who earned it as youth continue to earn it every day as adults. That is why an Eagle Scout IS an Eagle Scout-not was.” David took this very seriously and it is evident that he lived his entire life as an eagle scout and a gentleman; someone whose conduct conforms to the highest standard of propriety and correct behavior. He didn’t drink alcohol. He didn’t smoke. But he frequently admitted that he had an “unhealthy crush on Wonder Woman.”
There were clearly many facets to David’s life, some well known to all and some carefully and purposely hidden to all by him. Despite his own views on the matter, he was, in fact, by every measure, an elite, accomplished athlete. He held multiple state and national swim records (more than 100 Top Ten USMS Performances). Some of these records he held for decades. He completed some of the most ardent physical competitions ever arranged: the Western States 100, The Ironman at Kona, the Swim around Manhattan, and the Race Across America are just a few. He participated in trail runs, orienteering competitions, canoe races, open water competitions, kayak camping, river running and back country mountaineering. He never gave up. He never gave in. To quote his twin brother Joe, “David always was a very tough bird.”
To really know David, you’d have to be aware of his academic accomplishments as well as his athletic ones. Over the years, he wasn’t particularly forthcoming because he felt it made him appear “snooty.” When someone who didn’t know him well came looking for “Dr Tanner” he would always respond in a private conspiratorial voice that “Dr Tanner is particularly busy today, but I’m Dave, how can I help you?” He held degrees from IU in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Exercise Physiology, and Human Performance. In the truest sense of the word, he could honestly be described as a polymath. At IUB, David held various appointments and duties over the years. He was a computer programmer, data analyst, and statistical consultant. He was an outstanding instructor for multiple undergraduate courses in Exercise Science and Kinesiology. Perhaps most impressively, he mentored and was instrumental in assisting more than a dozen doctoral candidates complete their terminal degrees. Scholars from around the world recognized his expertise and his invaluable help in getting them through their difficult research projects. Some tried to hire him away from IU with no success. His loyalty to IU was boundless. A few interest areas in particular stand out: high altitude physiology, ventilatory mechanics, nutritional requirements of athletes, the physics of swimming, ventilatory motor performance are to name a few. He co-authored two books on the science of swimming and was an author and contributor to many, many peer reviewed research reports. He played an instrumental role in elevating the scholarship within the Kinesiology graduate program at IU from the late 1980s and onward.
David would tell you that the greatest reflection of his life efforts though, would be the North High School Swim Program. David coached at North for more than two decades developing a program displaying characteristics in line with his personal beliefs. With David at the helm at North, winning really wasn’t everything. To him it was only ever a minor measure of success. David celebrated each and every athlete’s progress regardless of the competitive outcomes of the races. He strove to build a “program legacy” whereby participation was most important element. His focus was centered on the lasting memories, the friendships formed and the unique traditions they embraced. Similar to what he observed and learned from Doc, his relationships with his swimmers had no expiration date. His focus was on the entire individual not specifically the athlete. David played the role of coach, mentor, teacher, role model, confidante, counselor and of course… friend. His time commitment was enormous, his commitment total. His coaching days began well before dawn and frequently he could be seen cycling home well after dark. According to his swimmers, his only fault, perhaps, was making them endure his daily “corny sense of humor.” But in reality, they universally loved him for it.
David never married despite being frequently in love. If you were to conclude that he therefore didn’t have a family, you’d be wrong. His family was Bloomington and his family eventually spanned the globe. His family consisted of all the swimmers who swam for him at North and all the swimmers who ever swam for IU. It included all the students he taught and all of the young scholars he helped. And of course his family included all of his brothers, their wives, children and grandchildren and his cousins in Wales.
David was a man of modest income and modest needs. Over his life he asked for so little and gave so much to so many. If you had to choose someone to save your life, no matter what … David would be your guy. If you tied yourself to a rope and traversed a dangerous crevasse field, David would be your choice to be on the other end. He would never let up, never give in. He was a hidden giant among us who was never able to recognize the extent of esteem for him that was held by all who knew him well. Though much too short, his was a life well lived. David left us with great memories, many photographs and his many footprints on all of our lives. He will be greatly missed by his family, close friends and admirers within the Danville and Bloomington communities and around the world.
A Celebration of Life for David will be scheduled at a later date.

Kenneth L. Bell, 87, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2020, at Mitchell Manor.
Born Sept. 12, 1932, in Orleans, he was the son of Howard Leon and Ruth (Lynton) Baylor. He married Faye Irene Allen Jan. 31, 1953.
Kenneth was a school bus driver for Mitchell Community Schools for 29 years and retired from Hatfield Elementary School with 40 years of service. Kenneth loved his job and enjoyed the kids.
He attended the Mitchell Wesleyan Church. Kenneth was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post No. 250.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Bell of Mitchell; grandchildren, Tessa (Cory) Mikels of Bedford and Daniel (Jennifer) Bell of Bedford; great-grandchildren, D. J. Randolph, Mason Gaines and Kendal Spires; step-great-grandchildren, Jayce Mikels and Kyler Mikels; and siblings, Larry (Roseanne) Bell of Mitchell and Emma James of Orleans.

Leonard Ray Bex, 98, passed away Friday, May 8, 2020, at Mitchell Manor.
Born May 10, 1921, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Isom and Della (Ray) Bex. He married Alta Jeraldine “Jerry” Miller July 29, 1943, and she preceded him in death Oct. 7, 2009.
Leonard retired from Carpenter Body Works and was a farmer. He was a member of the Fairview Church of Christ.
Survivors include his sons, Wesley C. (Jackie) Bex of Spencer and Randy D. Bex of Mitchell; grandchildren, Wesley C. Bex Jr. of Spencer and Wende L. Bex of Jacksonville, Florida; great-granddaughter, Samantha L. Lunz of Knob Lick, Kentucky; and great-great-grandsons, Mathew C. Lunz, David R. Lunz and Lucas D. Lunz.

W. May (Johnson) Newkirk, 95, of Ocala, Florida, passed away at 9:26 p.m. on April 2, 2020, at her home surrounded by her brother, Jack, and sister-in-law, Becky.
She was born June 24, 1924, in Lawrence County, the daughter of Fay E. and Villa (Monday) Johnson. She married John E. Newkirk in 1955, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 17, 2009. She was a secretary for the First Church of God and Ruel Steele, attorney, both in Bedford, in earlier years and in the Lawrence North School System in Indianapolis.
John and May retired and moved to Ocala, Florida, and enjoyed many wonderful years.
May was the oldest of eight children. Survivors are three brothers, Jim Johnson, and wife, Wilma, of Arizona, Jack Johnson and wife, Becky, of Bedford, and Kenny Johnson, of the state of Washington; two sisters, Rose Cummings and husband, Jack, and Vera Quackenbush and husband, Don, all of Bedford; sisters-in-law, Barbara Johnson, of the state of Washington, and Marilyn Johnson, of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brothers, Russell and Benny Johnson.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on May 14 at the Leatherwood Christian Cemetery with Pastor Sherman Thomas officiating.

Melvin Satterfield, 77, of Paoli, passed away at IU Bloomington Hospital Thursday May 7, 2020. He was born in Milltown, Indiana on August 27, 1942 to Jeff and Mae Satterfield. He married Judy Stroud on February 15, 1963 and she survives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Loren (Joyce) Satterfield.
Melvin attended school in Marengo and grew up near Hardinsburg. He worked at Kimball’s Piano for 29 years and built his home in his spare time. We were all overjoyed of his accomplishments.
Then later, he and his family owned and built the Satterfield’s Dairy Bar to a successful business, which he enjoyed very much. Meeting people and friends from near and far, from Tucson, Arizona to Louisville, to Florida; they kept coming back. Bobby Knight even patronized the business. Melvin went to Smoky Mountains one time and he and Bobby Knight discussed the establishment Melvin had built.
Then before retirement, Melvin worked at Paoli Throop and High School. He had many friends of all ages. He even helped in his wife’s daycare, taking them to Spring Mill for picnics. He and his family have taken some of their little daycare friends to Branson, Florida, Tucson, AZ, and Smoky Mountains. He enjoyed his whole family.
He liked camping, fishing, and traveling with his son and daughter, and of course, his wife. He always said he had a good life and his family was the best thing that ever happened to him. He too was loved. He was always there for you in time of need, no matter when or why. He was truly glad for you and seemed to understand. He was someone whom you could depend on.
Though we meet a lot of people in life, it seems like very few turn out to be a special friend. Melvin was my special friend for 57 years of marriage. He will be missed tremendously. He was my one true love, Judy.

Lillian Elizabeth “Becky” Stewart, 85, formerly of Springville, died May 4, 2020, after a period of declining health.
She was born May 7, 1934, in Lassater, Texas, to Louis and Lily (Bennett) Davis. She moved to Oklahoma City as a teenager and was a graduate of Northeast High School. She worked for Red Ball Transfer and T G &Y before settling down and becoming a farmer’s wife, mother and homemaker.
She lived in the Mustang, Oklahoma, community before moving to their farm near Verden, Oklahoma. She was an active member of the Verden United Methodist Church where she was known for her Corndog Sunday School parties. She moved to Springville, where she was active in the Hobbieville Community Church. She lived in Springville until last year when moved back to Oklahoma to be near her daughter.
She enjoyed reading, Bible Studies, sewing and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; an infant daughter, Deborah Ann; and her son, Ivan Ray. She is survived by one daughter, Susan Morgan and husband Jason of Wellston, Oklahoma; a “granddaughter of the heart,” Bobbie Cross; a sister, Vernie Hawkins of Springville; two brothers, Bobby Davis and wife Beverly of Jefferson, Texas, and Willie Davis and wife Mary of Williams.
Public visitation was held May 6 and a private family memorial service on Lillian’s 86th birthday, May 7, at McNeil’s Funeral Service, Mustang, Oklahoma, with interment following in the Mustang Cemetery.

Eleanor “Ellie” Genevieve (McKnight) Lang, 86, of Carmel, Indiana, went Home to rest with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday morning, May 2nd, 2020.
Ellie was born January 22nd, 1934 in Indianapolis, IN to the late W. Harold and Edna (Howell) McKnight and was raised in Bedford, IN. Ellie was a co-founder of Pink Ribbon Connection-an organization committed to providing emotional support and resources to those with breast cancer. She held many offices in Psi Iota Xi, working alongside dear friends raising money for those with speech and hearing difficulties. She was happiest making memories with family and friends.
Ellie was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Wm. Lang, son, Curtis (7-year-old) and parents.
She is survived by her loving children, Catherine Bain (David) of Carmel, IN, Susan Dernlan (Gary) of Wellington, FL, and William Lang (Jill) of Rockwall, TX; sister, Louise Hoover (John) 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Ellie will later be laid to rest next to her husband, Jay, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Parkinson’s Foundation in Ellie’s memory.

Jean Briner Hoevener, 90 of Seymour passed away at Lutheran Community Home on May 5, 2020. Baptized at Presbyterian Church in Crothersville, Indiana on February 27, 1930, Jean was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was a past greeter and President of Aid #1.
She was a 1947 graduate of Crothersville High School. Born February 3, 1930 in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Charles B. and Pearl Kurtz Briner. On April 27, 1952, she married Avis James Hoevener at Crothersville, Indiana at the Presbyterian Church. He preceded her in death June 20, 2008. They made their home in Seymour, Indiana. She worked in the offices of the U.S. Shoe Corporation in Crothersville, Seymour Farm Bureau and retired from the John C. Groub Company in 1988 after 33 ½ years.
Jean and her husband travelled extensively. She enjoyed her church, family, reading, puzzles and working in her flower beds. Her neighbors and friends were important to her.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sisters, Geneva, Betty, Charlotte and Wilma and brothers, Charles and infant Robert, one sister-in-law and five brothers-in-law.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her brother, Ronald (Dorothy) Briner of Columbus, her sister, Geraldine Barnes of Scottsburg, Indiana and several nieces and nephews.
Private family graveside services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery with Rev. James Rodriguez officiating.

Helen (Beasley) Abner age 84 of Bedford passed away on Wednesday May 6, 2020 at 4:30 Am at Westview Manor in Bedford.
She was born in Bedford on November 16, 1934 to William and Lillie (Fox) Beasley. Helen married Robert L. (Bob) Abner on September 7, 1952 and he preceded her in death on December 24, 1999.
Helen was a homemaker and graduate of Bedford High School Class of 1952.
Survivors include her children, Janie McLean of Fairlope, Alabama, Mary Ann Ault and husband Rudy of Medora, Robert (Les) Abner of Bedford and Sharon Shirley of Bedford, 18 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren

Shirley Ann Reynolds, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 4th at Hospice House in Bloomington.
She was born September 26, 1935 in Bedford, IN to Harold and Grace (Jones) Starr. She attended Bedford High School. Shirley married Gerald Reynolds of Bedford, and he preceded her in death in 1980.
Shirley worked as a staff member at White River Lodge for over 18 years, where she was extremely loyal and dedicated to the care of her residents. She truly loved everyone there, and considered this her calling. Each person there that she encountered was like family to her, and grateful for her love and compassion.
Shirley is survived by her loving family who were the highlight of her life, including son David Reynolds of Bedford, son Victor Reynolds and wife Rita, of Bedford, and daughter Crystal Watterson, and husband Alan of Atlanta GA. Shirley had 9 grandchildren that she adored including Rebecca Melson, Stormy Grissom, Brandon Reynolds, Brittany Reynolds, Garrett Reynolds, Daven O’Brien, Alec Watterson, Cameron Watterson, and Olivia Watterson. She also had 6 great grandchildren. Shirley had many close lifelong friends as well that she loved as though they were family.
A Celebration of Life ceremony is being planned for family and friends to attend, and will be announced at a later date.

Born Feb. 21, 1946, in Muncie, he was the son of Paul and Geneva (Blanton) Bell.
Larry was a self-employed truck driver.
Survivors include his five grandchildren; a great-grandson; and siblings, Carolyn Sue Bundy of Mitchell, Helen Sharpe of Mitchell and Gary Bell of Mitchell.
His parents; children, Kenneth Bell and Tyra Martin; and brothers, Jerry Bell and Kenny Bell, preceded him in death.

Jason Lee Blackwell left this earthly world for his Heavenly Home April 25, 2020.
He was born in St. Louis to Lorna Lloyd. He was raised in Pocahontas, Arkansas, by his maternal grandmother, Wanda Blackwell. In his teens he moved to Indiana to live with his mother and the only father he ever knew, Ronnie Lloyd.
He was charming, funny, and loving and worshipped his children. He will be forever missed.
He is survived by his mother, Lorna Lloyd of Bedford; children, Audrey, Gracie, Jason Lloyd, also of Bedford and Nevaeh Clouse of Bloomington; two brothers, Jeremy Blackwell and Benjamin Koch, both of Bloomington; stepsisters, Angela Neal and Heather Lloyd of Terre Haute; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He also left behind a friend of his soul, Tim Cowden of Bloomington.
He was preceded in death by his only dad, Ronnie Lloyd; maternal grandparents, Loyd and Wanda Blackwell; and one uncle, Dennis Blackwell of Missouri.
Jason chose cremation with a memorial service to be held at a later date.

He loved drawing, hanging out with friends and attending concerts.

She was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School. Denise was a member of Avoca Baptist Church and had attended Crossroads Community Church.
She had previously worked at Indiana School for the Deaf, human resource assistant at Life Designs, customer service at Republic Services, a group leader at Stone Belt, and most recently a contractor in human resources at Cook Medical.
Surviving are her mother, Delores; one brother, Alan (Judy) McAlhaney; two sisters, Beverly McAlhaney and Pam (Greg) Rainey; nieces, Mindi Rainey and her children, Brayden Evans and Kylee Rainey, and Jennie McAlhaney and her son, Jordan McAlhaney; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Darrel.
The family has chosen cremation.

Born June 25, 1953, in Bedford, he was the son of Robert and Rose Marie (Jones) Carter. He married Debra J. Edwards April 18, 1975.
Steven was an Eagle Scout and coached girls softball teams in Orleans. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1972.

Betty Joyce Rainey, 84, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2020, at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington.
Born May 23, 1935, in Jonesville, Virginia, she was the daughter of Grady and Laura (Buttery) Ramsey. She married Joe Rainey September 26, 1970, and he preceded her in death March 20, 2004.
Betty retired from Carpenter Body Works. She was a member of American Legion Post No. 250 Auxiliary, Mitchell Senior Citizens, and a graduate of Orleans High School in 1952. Betty loved to dance and enjoyed bowling and fishing.
Surviving: sons, Michael Greene of Mitchell, Brian (Cynthia) Rainey of Mitchell, Chad (Heather) Rainey of Colorado Springs, Colorado, grandchildren, Mitchell Rainey, Grant Rainey, and Karlee Rainey, step-daughter Dava Foster, step-grandchildren, Daniel (Jennifer) Bell, Tessa (Cory) Mikels, several great grandchildren; sister, Jewell Taylor of Mitchell.

Kenneth was a graduate of Orleans High School Class of 1986. He worked as a supply manager for Granite Inliner in Orleans. He was a member of ABGA and held a FAA Drone Pilot Certificate.
He is survived by his father, Clyde R. Dalton Sr., of West Baden, IN; one brother, Clyde R. Dalton, Jr. (Jackie) of West Baden, IN; and one sister, Rachel Dalton Sutopo of Terre Haute, IN. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his mother, and one brother-in-law, Sam Sutopo.

Virginia married Thomas Silvers on October 23, 1965, and he preceded her in death on April 22, 1998. She retired from Indiana Laborers Training Institute. She was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church and the Avoca Quilting Guild.

He was a 1964 graduate of Teterboro School of Aeronautics.

Rita retired from Throop Elementary School as a kindergarten teacher’s aid. She attended Carter’s Creek Christian Church and crochet club. She was part of the “calendar girls” friend group.

Dorothy Ellen Young Dailey, 85, Paoli, died May 2, at Paoli Health and Living in Paoli.
Born December 31, 1934, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Edward Aniel and Orna A. Hancock Young. She married Julius Dale Dailey, on December 24, 1958, and he passed away on April 26.
Dorothy (Dot) attended Youngs Creek School and was a graduate of Paoli High School, valedictorian and historian of the class of 1953. She had worked for the Orange County courthouse and attorneys and Paoli newspapers.
Dorothy had collected lighthouses and cardinal figurines and enjoyed doing word puzzles, eating out with friends and walking. She attended Paoli and Hardinsburg church services and loved singing gospel hymns.
Survivors include nephews and nieces from her sisters Hilda McCabe and Mary Chapman – Steve, Ronnie and Connie; Thomas, John and Suzanne. Survivors from Julius’ family are nephews and nieces Connie Minton, Kenny Minton, John Collins, Rusty Johnson and Tim Ferguson; Karen Alvey, Brenda Nicholson, Nancy Tillett, Donna Atchley, Marsha Meehan, Rebecca Lorey, Peggy Toby, Sheilla Allen and Barbara Penn. Also, Dorothy’s friends Jim and Norma Collins, Brian and Cory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters Mildred (Elwood) Kendall, Hilda (Clarence) McCabe and Mary (John) Chapman; brother George, an infant; her brothers-in-law Banks Dailey, Bryce Dailey and Robert (an infant); her sisters-in-law Roxie Minton, Leona Collins, Lucille Johnson and Jean Ferguson.

Naomi Kathryn Perry, 93, of Harrodsburg passed away Thursday, April 30, 2020 at Garden Villa in Bloomington.
Born, June 11, 1926 in Lawrence County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Thomas and Louise (Helton) Southern.
Naomi was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister who enjoyed watching IU Basketball, Cincinnati Reds Baseball, listening to gospel music and spending time with her family.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church on the Hill in Harrodsburg, and she was a former employee of Indiana University working in the Halls of Residence.
Survivors include her sons, Roger D. Perry and Jan D. Perry (Colleen), daughter-in-law, Judy Perry, and sisters, Beverly Schutte and Norma Blackwell, grandchildren, Liza Perry (Chuck Sample), Jacob Perry, Jill McCrosky and Joy Falahee (Tommy), great-grandchildren, Madison Sample, Abby Sample, Gabby Hernandez, Alexa Falahee and Forrest McCrosky.
Naomi was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Robert Wayne “Ned” Perry, son, David Michael “Mike” Perry, and siblings, Wayne Southern, Robert Southern, and Thomas Southern Jr., and sister, Oweetah Chasteen.
A private family graveside service will be Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Marilyn J. (Henry) Kelly, age 95, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away on Friday, May 1, 2020 at Bell Trace Health and Living in Bloomington.
She was born on November 2, 1924 in Upper Sandusky, Ohio to Theodore and Mabel Henry. Marilyn was a member of the Altar Guild at St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Bloomington. She enjoyed playing cards and other games, traveling as a member of Happy Travelers, and she loved being a grandmother.
Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Karen Luse, son, Thomas F. Kelly Jr. (Merri), grandchildren, Allison Griffith (Coble), Adam Luse, and Alex Kelly, and great-grandson, Asher Griffith.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. Kelly Sr., and her parents.
There will be no services. Marilyn will be buried in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Stella Jane Franklin, age 101, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. Stella was born August 21, 1918 in Freedom, Indiana to J. Mark and Nina Needy, the eldest of four children.
Stella retired from Indiana Bell Telephone Company after 21 years of service. She was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Bloomington Chapter, Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants, American Legion Auxiliary, and Eastern Star Montezuma Chapter. Stella was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Survivors are her five children — Sam (Ann) Hall of Fairfield Glade, TN, Suzanne (Wayne) Trisler, Bloomington, IN, Mary Jane Wilcox, Spencer, IN, Nancy (Lowell) Bailey, Hendricksville, IN, and Sally J. Callahan, Bloomington, IN, grandchildren Sarah, Chris, Thom, Mandie, Henry, Jesse, Judson, Brandon, and Ashley, 15 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband and father of their children Henry E. Hall, former husband Wilber J. Franklin, two grandsons — Ben Hall and Joseph Meadows, son-in-law Hugh E. Wilcox, her parents, sister Leah Galloway, and twin brothers Robert and Richard Needy.

James William “Jim” Hornocker, Jr.
July 22, 1951 — April 30, 2020
James William “Jim” Hornocker, Jr., 68, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2020, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born July 22, 1951, in Bedford, he was the son of James William and Deloris (Reichman) Hornocker, Sr. He married Mary Lou Suddarth May 17, 2011.
Jim served six years as a Mitchell Police Officer and retired from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department with 35 years of service. He held the rank of captain for 29 years. He was a U. S. Army veteran, held the rank of Master Sergeant, and was a member of American Legion Post No. 250.
Jim was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM and La-Or-Ma Shrine Club. He was a founding member of Spring Mill Fraternal Order of Police and dedicated his life to law enforcement.
Jim was a member of Avoca Baptist Church and a graduate of Bedford High School in 1969. Jim raised horses, was a horse farrier, and spent lots of time with his friends at horse camps. Jim was a fan of NASCAR and the Indianapolis Colts. He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, Megan and Miranda, and his dog, Sluggo.

Marc D. Denny
Feb. 03, 1942 — April 19, 2020
After a life full of love and laughter shared with a huge circle of family, friends, and colleagues, Marc died peacefully on April 19, 2020.
He will be remembered for his wit and sense of humor, his joyful nature, his athletic achievement, and for teaching, helping, and inspiring many.
Marc was born Feb. 3, 1942, in Bedford, Ind., to Morris Duane “Beany” Denny and Helen Pentzer Denny.
His childhood in Bedford was consumed by activities with his large family and numerous friends. Throughout his life, he recalled with fondness the holiday gatherings (especially Christmases), the outings around Southern Indiana and beyond, and the boyhood adventures at his home on “O” Street and throughout Bedford.
One noteworthy event was a bicycle race that his group of friends put together in the summer of 1958. They dubbed it the “Miniature 500,” nodding to the Indianapolis 500 and to the Little 500 at Indiana University in Bloomington. The local newspaper published a story about it, including a photograph in which Marc, atop a bicycle, was prominent. When it comes to naming the many family members and friends who took part in this and other stories, Marc said, “President Eisenhower once said—to someone, not me—‘Don’t try to list everybody you want to recognize, because you’ll always leave someone out.’ So let’s not try.”
Ten years before the bike race, at age 6, Marc survived being struck by a moving car as he rode his tricycle near his home. The collision, which threw him high in the air, broke his leg and gave him a prominent scar that grew as he did, and he grew plenty—by the end of high school, he was 6 feet, 8 inches tall.
In addition to height, Marc possessed natural athleticism, and he excelled at numerous sports. While he was in high school, the local bowling alley selected a local amateur to take on a professional. Marc was chosen, and he gave the pro a scare. Though the pro ultimately won, midway through the game Marc said he heard the pro say, “This kid is going to beat me.” There was also football, baseball, slow-pitch softball, golf, and tennis. With tennis, he often boasted about being Bedford city champion. Once he let that fact set in, he would offer a disclosure: “Only two people entered the tournament.”
He was most accomplished, though, on the basketball court. He used his size and skill to great effect and was a standout for the Bedford High School Stonecutters, scoring more than 800 points in his career. Donning No. 53, he averaged 24 points per game in his senior season, earning him an alternate spot on the 1960 Indiana All-Star team. He was widely recruited, and he chose Butler University, in Indianapolis. He stayed only one year, however. “Their expectations were too high,” he said. “They never told me I had to study.”
Searching for a new school, he chose the one that his girlfriend since high school, Mayme Jo Williams, was attending—Indiana State University, in Terre Haute. She made the difference. “She helped me get through,” he said. Marc also played on the basketball team.
By the spring of 1964, Marc and Mayme Jo had earned their degrees, and on May 29, 1964, they were married in Bedford. This year would have marked their 56th wedding anniversary.
In that same year, 1964, they accepted teaching positions in Salem, Ind., near Bedford, where they taught for two years. Marc also coached basketball and other sports.
In 1966, Marc accepted a teaching position at Palatine High School in suburban Chicago. He taught social science, economics, and anthropology, among a number of subjects; he coached sports; and, in his early years, served as bus driver “of ol’ No. 14.”
In 1970, Marc earned a master’s degree in education with a major in counseling and guidance from Indiana University in Bloomington. That education, which he pursued during his summers off, led him to make a switch at Palatine High School from teacher to guidance counselor.
By the beginning of 1972, Marc and Mayme Jo had moved into a house in Lake Zurich, Ill., and were the parents of three boys—J.D., Chandler, and Jack. Another son, Carson, would be born in 1976.
One of Marc’s longtime responsibilities was serving as senior class sponsor, which put him in charge of all the class’s activities, culminating with the high school’s commencement. He aimed to create a graduation ceremony that presented “due respect, decorum, and formality” for the students and their families. He also delivered an efficient ceremony. Each year, as things got started, he would tell the audience: “The bad news is, in a few minutes, we’ll be joined by hundreds of teenagers. The good news is we’ll be done in 60 minutes.” He said of Palatine’s commencement, “It is my proudest legacy.”
For a number of years, he was stadium announcer for Palatine High School’s home football games, serving as the “voice of the Pirates.” He found a unique way to give recognition to each game’s deserving Palatine player: When he would announce the attendance—an estimate of his making—he made sure the last one or two digits of the attendance number matched the outstanding player’s uniform number. It became something of a tradition that the crowd would expect and appreciate.
In 2000, after more than three decades on the job, Marc retired from Palatine High School. He continued to work there and elsewhere in District 211 on a part-time basis for a number of years. Thanks to his longtime involvement in so many activities and his outgoing and positive personality, Marc was a well-known and popular figure at the high school. Students, alumni, faculty, and staff spoke highly of him, and many stayed in touch throughout his life. His retirement party was a huge affair.
Professionally, in addition to his duties at the high school, he taught master’s level courses to teachers, primarily focusing on classroom management. He was an in-demand speaker on that topic at numerous schools in the area. He also maintained a private counseling practice for a number of years.
In his personal life, much of what Marc did revolved around family and friends. He was an integral part of “trips to nowhere,” a tradition begun by his mother later in her life. Known as “Nanny” to many, she knew where they were heading; the rest of the group was clueless, though confident they would arrive somewhere worthwhile. Wherever they ended up, it was made more interesting by their presence. This crew always managed to create a good-natured ruckus.
Marc showed his love of athletics throughout his life, both as a participant and as an observer. He played basketball recreationally into his 30s and for many years was a skilled bowler and golfer. He carded a hole-in-one in 2008.
He was a regular attendee of area high-school basketball games for decades—especially games featuring Palatine, Lake Zurich (where his sons played), and Jacobs, in Algonquin, Ill., where his son Jack coaches. He also paid close attention to Bedford’s teams. And he always had a bag of popcorn.
Marc’s activities along the way included serving as a Little League baseball coach; inheriting a newspaper route from his dog-fearing young son; and, taking over another son’s pizza delivery gig. With those deliveries, he had assistance from Mayme Jo, who claims she did all the work.
When his sons played in basketball and football leagues as adults, Marc was there. He was honorary coach of the Vipers, a flag football team. Later, though it was difficult for him because of his health, he was in attendance for soccer games and dance recitals of his granddaughters, who knew him as “Granddad.”
He also managed the family’s “fleet of cars,” which on occasion filled the driveway and part of the yard. It wasn’t a fancy collection. As evidence, after paying for a family meal, he would often say, “I’ve had cars worth less than that.” At one point, there was a Honda CB650 motorcycle in the mix.
Marc and Mayme Jo loved rock-and-roll music, and they and friends attended many concerts around the Chicago area. They went much farther a number of times (the Illinois State Fair; Branson, Mo.) to see their favorite bands. At these shows—and at weddings and other gatherings—Marc and Mayme Jo were fixtures on the dance floor. Later in life, blaring his home computer’s speakers, he would do the Twist with his granddaughters.
He also eagerly took part in countless parties (like the ones at his sons’ Wrigleyville apartment, “3511”), holiday celebrations, birthdays, and weddings. In these settings, Marc was sure to share memorable anecdotes, observations, one-liners, jokes, insights, and opinions that would keep things entertaining. In times of distress or sadness, Marc proved to be a patient listener, a comforting voice, and a wise guide.
He took to Facebook and attracted more than 1,000 friends. They would get updates on his activity, of course, but they also were treated to his commentary on Bedford police reports and were introduced to a new political party that Marc and a friend formed: The Chameleon Party, whose platform was “We’ll do whatever you want us to do. Just name it.”
Marc loved porch swings, as does Mayme Jo, and they were often seen swinging at their homes in Lake Zurich and Bedford. For a time, Marc could often be seen wearing his bib overalls. The porches were popular destinations for their friends and neighbors, and the conversations were often lively. Recalling the regular visits to Bedford, he said, “I would get in the house, grab a Big Red pop, go sit on the swing, and watch the cars go by. I thought: ‘This is heaven. This is my favorite place in the whole world.’”
As a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend, colleague, and educator, Marc Denny was a bright light. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Denny; and his sister Julie Denny-Hughes.
Marc is survived by his wife, Mayme Jo (Williams) Denny; sons J.D. Denny, Chandler Denny (Cinnamon), Jack Denny, Carson Denny (Katie); granddaughters Adeline and Reese Denny; sister Susie Rumsey (Guy); and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Patty Houpt Byers, 73, of Salem, OR, died at 11:45pm on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at home surrounded by her family.
Born March 17, 1947 in Lawrence County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Ilene Houpt.
She married Richard D. Byers, Jr. on December 19, 1970 and he survives. She retired from the Tippecanoe School Corporation as an elementary school teacher at Klondike Elementary. She was a member of the West Lafayette Baptist Church and a former member of the Avoca Baptist Church.
She was a 1965 graduate of Needmore High School, attended Indiana State University and she graduated from Indiana University.
She loved to travel the country to see the wildlife and beautiful scenery. She loved flowering plants of all kinds and shared cuttings from her gardens with friends and relatives.
Survivors include her husband, Richard of Salem, OR.; two sons, Bradley of Loveland, CO, and Brett of Astoria, OR.; one sister, Nancy Merchen of Savannah, GA.; one brother David Houpt of Mitchell, IN.

Born January 1, 1952 in Bedford, he was the son of Raymond and Kathleen (Moore) Anderson.
He was a Needmore High School graduate Class of 1970. Stuart retired from General Motors in 1998. He attended Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Marvin Ray Parks, 74, of Indianapolis, formally of Orleans, passed away at 9:55 AM on April 27, 2020 at Community Heart Hospital in Indianapolis.
He was born June 1, 1945 in French Lick, IN, the son of Hermel Glenn Monroe and Rachel Irene (Mills) Parks. He married Jann (McClintock) Parks on July 1, 1967 and she survives.
He owned Parks Grocery in Orleans for seventeen years and worked thirty-three years for US postal service as a mail carrier. He was a member of the Orleans First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. He graduated from Springs Valley High School, class of 1963.
He is survived by his wife of Indianapolis; one son, Dana Hermel Parks of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, David Rockchild III, Savannah, David Thomas, Marvin Ray, Brandon, Landon, Issac, William Franklin; four siblings, Barnetta Hendrix of French Lick, Herald Glenn of Indianapolis, Doris Emmons of French Lick and Chester Parks of Paoli.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Norma Wilson.
The graveside service will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 4, 2020 at Fairview Cemetery in Orleans with Reverend Michael Williams officiating.

Mr. Wencel R. Mull, age 104, of Lanesville, formerly of Salem, passed away Tuesday, April 28 at Harrison Healthcare in Corydon.
Mr. Mull was born February 8, 1916 in Washington County, Indiana the son of Alva and Mamie Hinds Mull. Wencel was a farmer most of his life in Washington County and worked as a machinist at Jeff Boat at the same time. He was a former member of Fort Hill Church of Christ and a current member of Corydon Church of Christ. He was also a former member of Pekin Saddle Club. He loved to deer hunt, ride horses, and watch car races, as he wanted to be a race car driver when he was younger.
Wencel was preceded in death by his wife: Marguerite M. Martin Mull, a brother: Cleo Mull, a sister: Louise Clark, and his parents.
He is survived by two daughters: Janey Jones of Salem and Roberta Sullivan of Corydon, three grandsons: Steve Sullivan (Susie) of New Salisbury, Scott Sullivan (Kevin) of Louisville, and Jason Jones (Shana) of Florida, four great-granddaughters: Rene Michael (Tim) of Floyds Knobs, Sara Sanon (Stanley) of Jeffersonville, Shauna Maxwell (Lenny) of Pekin, and Layah Jones of Florida, and three great-great-grandchildren: Semaj Sanon of Jeffersonville, Carman Maxwell of Pekin, and James Maxwell of Pekin.
