Julian - Russell A. Julian, age 85, of Mitchell, passed away Monday, March 24, at Bloomington Hospital. Born November 4, 1911, in Benton County, IN, he was the son of Milo D and Maggie (Foster) Julian. He married Ruth W. Garrison on June 12, 1938, and she survives.

Mr. Julian graduated from Walton High School and Indiana University. He was a retired public school music teacher. His musical activities included the Marching Hundred at Indiana University, Pelz ensemble, University Symphony, Ft. Wayne Civic Symphony, and Evansville Philharmonic. He made three consecutive solo appearances in Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

He was a member of Jacob Finger United Methodist Church, a Paul Harris Fellow, past president, and a 50 year member of Mitchell Rotary Club, Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band, Indiana State Teachers Association, Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association, Spring Mill Squares, Hoosier Rounds Dance Club, and the Marion Township Farm Bureau.

Surviving in addition to the wife are one son, Gary A. Julian, Englewood, CO, and four daughters: Winifred A. Heuring of Hobart, IN, Joy A. Shaver of Crawfordsville, IN, Lynn M. Miller of Mitchell, IN, and Janet G. Weir of Bloomington, IN. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and two sisters.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Thursday at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Lucas officiating. A graveside service will be at 4:00 PM Thursday at Galveston Cemetery in Galveston, IN, with the Rev. Jonathon Gosser officiating. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Wednesday and after 8:30 AM Thursday until the service at the funeral home.

Kendall - Dr. Perry E. Kendall, age 75, of Mitchell, passed away Wednesday, March 5, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.He was born on July 27, 1921, in Orange County, the son of Oren Clayton and Evalene Taylor Kendall. He first married Martha I. Miller, who died in 1982. He next married Lois Slaughter in 1983, and she survives. He is also survived by a son, Darin Kendall of Columbus, OH, two daughters, Lori Kendall of San Jose, CA and Judith Wiese of Lima, OH, two stepsons, Brent Slaughter of Orleans and Adrian Slaughter of Mitchell, one stepdaughter, Lana Hudelson of Orleans, one brother, Bobbie Kendall of Burlington, IA, eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Vivian Saieg and Wilma Marsh.

He received his bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. from Purdue University. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church, Mitchell Masonic Lodge #228, and several professional organizations. He was a retired electrical engineer and scientist. In recent years he worked at H&R Block in Mitchell. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, March 8, at the Liberty Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dale Hatfield officiating. Burial will be in the Mitchell Cemetery.

Edwards - Bertha M. Edwards, age 98, of Mitchell, passed away Wednesday, March 5, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born August 9, 1898, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Eli and Sarah Toliver Burton. She married Leroy Edwards on December 28, 1918, and he preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, and three sisters. She is survived by three daughters, Blanche Terry and Thelma Brown of Mitchell, Pauline Auxier of Bloomfield, one son, Paul Edwards of Clarksville, twelve grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and eight great, great grandchildren. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 8, at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Hatfield officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Edward Albertson, Paul Albertson, Dan Brown, Denzil Brown, John Brown, Mike Brown, David Terry, DonTerry, Ralph Terry, and Larry Brown.

Barnes - Verlin K. Barnes, age 81, of Mitchell, passed away Wednesday, March 5, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born November 19, 1915, in Arcola, IL, he was the son of William Mason and Oma Slaughter Barnes. He married Ruth McIntire on January 24, 1936, and she survives. Also surviving are three sons, Robert W. Barnes of Pittsburgh, PA, Kenneth E. Barnes of Westminster, CA, William F. Barnes of Mitchell, seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Barbara Ann, a brother, Clovis Barnes, and a sister, Marie Brim. Friends may call at the Chastain Funeral Home from 4-8 PM Saturday and after 11:30 AM Sunday until the hour of the service. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday with the Rev. David Shephard officiating. Burial will be in Talbott Cemetery.

Wendy Gayle Morthland, Heltonville, died March 1 in a traffic accident east of Bedford. She was born in Bedford July 12, 1981 to Shawna Cummings Prairie and David Morthland. Wendy was a sophmore at BNL High School where she was an honor student. She was a member of the 4-H Club and attended Fairview Community Church. Wendy's primary hobby was raising and riding horses.

Survivors include her mother of Heltonville, her father and stepmother (Debbie Morthland) of Bedford, two sisters, Lindsey Morthland and Amanda Prairie, her maternal grandparents, Hubert and Estey Cummings of Heltonville, and her paternal grandparents, William and Roberta Morthland of Brazil.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. Friends may call 2 - 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

A 4-H scholarship fund is being set up in Wendy's name.

Pitman - Addie Eva Pitman, Bedford, died February 20, 1997, at The Hospitality House. She was born in Lawrence County on October 5, 1912, to Edward and Debbie McPherson Mosley. In November, 1950, she married Clint Pitman, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were one son, Leon Perdue, two daughters, Martha Jane Perdue and Eveline Marshall, and one brother, Russell Mosley. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Patton of Bedford, one sister, Mrs. Florence Sherman of Mesa, AZ, one brother, Clarence Mosley of Bellingham, WA, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. She was of Pentecostal faith. The funeral will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 22 in The Elmwood Chapel of The Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. Calling hours are 4:00 to 9:00 PM on Friday, February 21, at The Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Hunter - Toni R. Hunter, R. 13, Bedford, died at the residence on February 19, 1997. She was born in Washington Court House, Ohio, on January 1, 1947, to Bernard and Beulah Leach Huffman. In June, 1965, she married Danny Lee Hunter, who survives. Also surviving are the parents of Washington Court House, Ohio, one daughter, Mrs. David (Elizabeth) Kern of Bedford, two sons, Bradley and Gregory Hunter, both of Bedford two grandchildren, two sisters, Lana Stinson and Connie Wilson, both of Ohio, two brothers, Allen and Marty Huffman, both of Ohio, and several neices and nephews. Toni Hunter was a homemaker and a member of Mundell Christian Church. Services will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 22, at the Mundell Christian Church with Bob Terry officiating. Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, February 21 at The Day & Carter Mortuary and from 11:00 AM until the hour of the service on Saturday, February 22, at The Mundell Christian Church. Burial will be in Mundell Cemetery.

Ikerd - Alva Lou Ikerd, Bedford, died Sunday, February 16, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was born in Macon, GA, on December 1, 1911. On August 18, 1932, she married Lawrence "Beanie" Ikerd, who died in May, 1961. Also preceding her in death were two sisters. Surviving are one daughter, Sara Kaufmann of Killeen, TX, and two sons, Larry Ikerd of Bedford and Harold Ikerd of Miami, FL, eleven grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bedford, and a 50 year member of the Order of The Eastern Star #129, where she was a Past Worthy Matron. Friends may call at The Day & Carter Mortuary on Tuesday, February 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Eastern Star services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Tuesday evening during the visitation hours. The funeral will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 19, in The Elmwood Chapel of The Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Jon Lineback officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Hayes - S. Merle Hayes, R. 18, Bedford, died Saturday, February 15th, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. He was born in Lawrence County on January 3, 1919, to Lester and Pearl Moore Hayes. He married Mary Wood on February 24, 1945, and she survives. He is survived also by a daughter, Janet Crane of Bedford, a brother, Farrell Hayes of Springville, and three granddaughters. Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, William and Robert Hayes. As a member of the Erie United Methodist Church he served as church treasurer for forty years and also as Trustee and choir director. He was a member of UAW, local 440, and was retired from Central Foundry. He was a Past President of the Lawrence County 4-H Fair and a member of the East Lawrence Water Corporation where he had served on its Board of Directors since the board was organized. He was also a member of Bedford Lodge #14, F & AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis, a life member of Gillen Post #33, American Legion (serving in the Navy during WW II), and the Lawrence County Cattlemans Assn. Springville Feeder Auction. Services will be held Tuesday, February 18, 1997 at 1 PM in the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary, the Rev. Willie Best and Mrs. Valerie Best officiating. Friends may call at the Day & Carter Mortuary on Monday, February 17, from 2 o'clock until 9 o'clock PM and on Tuesday, February 18, from 10 AM until the service hour. Burial will be in Erie Cemetery.

Stultz - D. Celee Stultz, Bedford, IN, died Thursday, February 13, 1997, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. He was born January 1, 1916, in Lawrence County, and was the son of Earl Stultz and Euphia May. In November, 1941, he married Eva Morrow. He is survived by his wife, Eva, and a son, Gregory Stutlz, of Crystal River, FL. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford, the American Legion Gillen Post #33, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, the Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F & AM, and was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a deacon for 35 years in the Baptist faith. The service will be Sunday at 1:00 PM in the Elmwood Faith Chapel of The Day & Carter Mortuary, with the Rev. Jon Lineback officiating. Friends may call from 12 o'clock noon until 9:00 PM on Saturday, February 15, and on Sunday, February 16, from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 PM on Saturday, and military rites will be accorded at the graveside.

Connors - Helen L. Connors, Martinsville, IN, formerly of Bedford, died Thursday, February 13, 1997, at Bloomington Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born September 17, 1919, in Lawrence County, IN, to William and Martha Long Ray and in 1941 married James M. Connors, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were seven brothers and one sister. She is survived by a son, James L. Connors of Greenwood, IN., two daughters, Patricia Coffin of Martinsville and Shirley Turpen of Bedford, one sister, Ruth Edgar of Tyler, TX., nine grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She was a member of Englewood Baptist Church. The service will be at 3:00 PM on Sunday, February 16, in the Elmwood Chapel of The Day & Carter Mortuary, with Jerry Ray officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 to 9:00 PM on Saturday, February 16, and from 12:00 noon until the hour of the service on Sunday. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
